One of the UK\u2019s most prolific talent managers, Prof Jonathan Shalit OBE<\/a>, was a fantastic Season 3 guest on my Events That Made Me <\/strong><\/a>podcast. And, one of the most memorable things he said to me was:<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking harder and thinking broader than your competitors gets you more lovers and more haters.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This sentiment couldn\u2019t resonate more with me. After all, a great danger in business – and particularly in events – isn\u2019t failing, but being forgettable. That’s why standing out in business matters.<\/p>\n

WHY STANDING OUT IN BUSINESS MATTERS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve spent decades designing and choreographing moments people talk about for years. The Gary Neville<\/a> and Emma Neville<\/a>‘s Great Mancunian Ball at Aviva Studios for St Ann’s Hospice<\/a>. Apadmi<\/a>\u2019s Halloween family fright night at Diecast. Rainforest revelry at Chester Zoo<\/a>. That\u2019s the level of unforgettable I aim for. But truthfully, it doesn\u2019t come without a price. Because standing out sometimes means walking a fine line between admiration and criticism from your competitors and peers.<\/p>\n

All the same, it\u2019s been and remains integral to both my business and who I am as an individual.<\/p>\n

Being bold can be risky. But being bland is worse. Honestly, you\u2019re doing it wrong if people aren\u2019t moved by what you do, whether it\u2019s positively or negatively.<\/p>\n

While it reminds me of the decades of experience Jonathan and I share between us, it also remains at the heart of my business going forward.<\/p>\n

For example, when I began working as a hospitality consultant with Hessian<\/a>, we were adamant about not blending in. Instead, the goal was to stand out by providing superior event catering with a signature, unique flair. Fast forward and they ended 2024 on a high, with jobs including Lamborghini and Sports Personality of the Year.<\/p>\n

In terms of my business, was every decision perfect? No. But every risk, every bold move, was intentional. And I believe my success owes much to the strategy of standing out.<\/p>\n

THE BENEFITS OF BEING BRAVE<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Asking why standing out in business matters it actually asking how the businessperson will break through the crowd. Standing out as an individual can create a perception of you as a persona rather than a human being. But the upside of this is getting your personal branding (and, in my case, my employer branding too) front and centre, whether people like you for it or not.<\/p>\n
